Help get Our Trees Ready for Spring - Sunday, April 21

posted Mar 24, 2013, 11:06 AM by Fina Santa-Maria

Please help make a greener Federal Hill South! All are welcome to join your neighborhood tree steward team on Sunday, April 21st, to get our local trees ready for spring and prepare for future tree plantings.

We’re looking for volunteers who want to help mulch existing trees, trim and cleanup old weeds, and help identify and prep new areas for trees. We’ll meet at the corner of Gittings and Battery at 1pm. If you want or need to join us later -- up until about 3pm -- just call us on our cell phones: John (443-717-1082) or Joanna (443-286-9672).

Now that our neighborhood trees are starting to show signs of spring, please remember to take time to give a little attention. If the mulch in the tree box in front of your house has washed away, please consider adding another bag or two. Mulch helps keep water in and prevents the soil around the tree from becoming too compacted.

If your tree was planted within the last three years, remember that it will need to be watered regularly once the first leaves appear. Plan to water your tree twice a week, with 5-10 gallons of water at each watering. The water should be poured slowly over the roots and soil around them so it doesn’t run off. Older trees don’t need to be watered as frequently, unless the weather is particularly dry.

All trees will appreciate a spring checkup even if you can't join us on April 21st. If you see any changes in your tree, or think it’s doing poorly, please contact us at fhstrees@yahoo.com. As always, we welcome all volunteers! We'd appreciate you emailing us if you will be coming on April 21st so that we can bring enough snacks and treats to keep everyone fueled up. See you there!
