Closet too full? Donate your extra coats to the needy!

The Baltimore Police Department is collecting coats for the poor families in South Baltimore. Every year, they ask for clean coats in good condition – all sizes, kids and adults.

Last year, residents in our area donated about 150 coats, enough that the families were able to get two coats each, rather than just one. The families have all been identified as needing help, and the line of people hoping to get coats is always very long. The police officers set up the coats by size in a room at the Southern District office, so the families from Cherry Hill, Brooklyn, Curtis Bay and other communities can come in and pick out a few.

We’re expecting a cold winter, so please check your closets. This year, they’re also accepting hats, scarves, gloves and mittens.

If you have something to donate, contact Diana Sugg at, or drop them off at 829 William Street.

The deadline is Dec. 12.

Or for those in Federal Hill South, you may drop your winter clothing items off with Sarah Humphreys and Larry Mason at 1273 Riverside and they will drop them off at the Southern District for you!
