Mission

Most of us bargained for lots of concrete and asphalt when we moved to the city, but don't despair.....the Garden Club is here!

Our goal is to beautify the neighborhood's few green spaces, including Henry Street Park and the tree plots in front of our houses, as well as to add hanging baskets from lampposts and place large flowering pots on street corners.

Activities

Since organizing in October of 2000, the Garden Club has successfully purchased, planted and found caretakers for 25 flowering planters located on street corners throughout the neighborhood. Our ultimate goal is to adorn every corner with beautiful greenery.

One of the planters left by the Garden Club, twenty-five have been placed so far.

The landscaping in front of Henry Street Park and on Sanders Corner is also the work of the Garden Club. We partnered with the Baltimore Cooperative Extension and master gardeners throughout the city to plant and beautify these areas. We secured permission from the owners of the previously weed and trash-infested vacant lot on the corner of William and Gittings Streets and have turned it into a breathtaking oasis filled with trees, plants and shrubs.

An Adopt-A-Tree-Plot program has been organized to encourage neighbors to be responsible for the tree plots directly in front of their homes. We mulch these tree plots annually to reduce weeds and improve the appearance throughout.

Community collaboration is what we are all about. The Garden Club has assisted Federal Hill Main Street, the Recreation Center on Cross Street, Federal Hill Elementary School, and the Light Street Library in beautifying their businesses with plantings. We sponsor an annual Spring plant sale and a holiday wreath sale to raise funds for these endeavors, but always welcome donations!

However, we can't do these things without you! We are always looking for volunteers with creative ideas and/or know-how to put these dreams to work. Green thumbs are not necessary! You may give as little or as much time as you like so don't be afraid to join. If nothing else, we promise it will be more fun than The Federal Hill South Concrete and Asphalt Club.

If you are interested in meeting some great neighbors and getting your hands dirty, please contact us!
